Natural remedies for sciatica

Natural Remedy

Apart from medical treatment, sciatica can be relieved by some natural solutions. Oliceo gives you here some of these home remedies.

First of all, note that sciatica is a painful condition that can affect the daily life of the person with the disease.

It reflects a continuous pain that manifests itself in the sciatic nerve. Located in the lower part of the spine, the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It is subdivided and forms a set of nervous trunks. One of the missions of this nerve is to send the impulses towards the movements that we carry out.

Chronic or recurrent, sciatica is distinguished by the severe pain felt in the lumbar region. These pains can spread from the buttocks to the feet through the legs.

Home remedies sciatica

Sciatica problems usually occur as a result of:

1- A deficiency of magnesium or vitamins of group B.

2- A poor diet.

3- An excess of mercury in the blood.

4- A cumulative toxin in the joints  Neuralgic pain can also be caused by factors such as obesity, heavy loads or high-heeled shoes, herniated discs, poor posture and genetics.

In some cases, they are related to the presence of a tumour that covers the spinal cord of the lumbar region. Also be aware that if you sit for long hours or if you have diabetes, you are more likely to have sciatica in your life.

The conventional drugs used to calm sciatic pain, namely ibuprofen and paracetamol do not always provide the desired results. In addition, they can produce side effects that can aggravate the pain. That is why it is better to turn to natural remedies, effective to neutralize the symptoms of sciatica. We present you some of them:

1- Turmeric:

Several scientific studies have shown that turmeric has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in the same way as paracetamol, cortisone and ibuprofen. And unlike its medical products, it does not cause any side effects.

In the case of osteoarthritis of the knee or the shoulder, muscular pains, chronic headaches or sciatic pain, it acts effectively to limit the symptoms.

The curcumin it contains contributes significantly to the relief of inflammation and the reduction of oxidative stress. It also slows the ageing of the bones.

To achieve the anti-sciatic remedy:

*  Boil a glass of milk.

* Add a cinnamon stick after letting it rest for a few moments.

* Then put a teaspoon of turmeric in the glass and drink it twice a day until the pain subsides.

2- Hot and cold compresses:

Hot and cold compresses are an effective solution to lighten sciatica because of their anaesthetic effect on pain. Putting a hot compress on the painful part helps to restrict inflammation of the sciatic nerve.

As for the cold compress, it helps control the pain and weaken the swelling around the nerve. It is advisable to alternate the two by starting with the hot compress.

This remedy should be applied every two hours until the pain is relieved.

3- Yoga to eradicate sciatica:

Yoga is one of the natural methods that can be used to eliminate sciatic pain. Some yoga postures can indeed relax the muscles of the spine, which erases muscle contractions due to sciatica.

After a few sessions of yoga, the muscles of your body will relax and the back pain will disappear.

4- Nettle:

As a therapeutic plant, nettle can be used to control rheumatism and arthritis and sciatic pain. Drinking a nettle tea significantly reduces the pain caused by joint disorders.

5- Oregano and thyme:

Anti-inflammatory agents, oregano and thyme are two excellent natural solutions to treat a case of sciatica.

All you have to do is:

* To add a spoonful of thyme in a litre of water already containing a spoonful of oregano;

* Then boil this mixture for 15 minutes;

* Let stand 5 minutes before filtering and then consume two cups a day.

6- St. John’s Wort oil, a powerful remedy for sciatica:

Possessing analgesic properties, St. John’s Wort oil is an effective way to soften the sciatic pain. It consists of a substance called hypericin that has anti-inflammatory properties and acts on the nerves to minimize neuralgic pain. You just have to massage it on the affected area. This oil is available in organic shops and pharmacies.

7- Peppermint:

Peppermint essential oil is highly recommended for people with sciatica. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect, it soothes the pain related to the sciatic nerve. Just put a small amount on the affected areas.

8- The willow:

Comprising salicin, which is one of the active agents of aspirin, willow has analgesic properties. The infusion of willow, therefore, has a beneficial effect on sciatic pain.

By consuming it regularly, you will be able to suppress the muscular tensions and to calm the neuralgias.

To prepare it:

* Boil half a litre of water with a piece of willow bark;

* Cook for about fifteen minutes;

* Then remove the preparation from the heat, filter carefully and take one cup of the infusion every 8 hours.

If you are currently on medical treatment, tell your doctor before using any of these remedies to see if there is an opportunity for interaction.

In the meantime, to moderate the risk of sciatica, exercise regularly, avoid smoking and include more foods rich in vitamins C and magnesium in your diet. Vitamin C has a protective effect on the sciatic nerve and magnesium helps decrease the risk of muscle contraction.

Need a fast and high-performance remedy?

Gaultheria essential oil is probably the most effective in this kind of situation. Thanks to its high concentration of methyl salicylate, which is a molecule similar to aspirin, wintergreen will soothe inflammation in a short time.

For this, put three pure drops on the lower back and gently massage. The combination of the analgesic action of the essential oil and massage will be very beneficial to relax your back. This will bring a welcome relief to most of the symptoms of sciatica.

Massage the painful area 3 to 5 times a day, for a maximum of one week. Beyond, if the pain does not fade, it is recommended to consult your doctor.
In fact, your doctor can advise you to make a radiological examination, in order to detect a possible herniated disc.

Massage oil over-measuring!

If your aromatherapy cabinet is more complete, it is quite possible to compose a more complete synergy, to bind with a vegetable oil to obtain a highly effective massage solution!
You can make this massage oil by yourself, by keeping it in a glass bottle (dark).

Miraculous massage oil:

3 drops of wintergreen essential oil
2 drops of peppermint essential oil
2 drops of essential oil of camphor rosemary
3 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil
2 drops of St. John’s Wort essential oil
10 drops of arnica vegetable oil

Apply this mixture along with the path of the nerve (without pressing so as not to revive the pain); 3 to 5 times a day, depending on the intensity of the crisis, for a maximum of one week.

The clay poultice; a natural remedy that relieves and heals!

If you have a little time, you can also use a clay poultice to incorporate a few drops of wintergreen, lemon eucalyptus, and peppermint essential oils.
In a glass bowl or small bowl, no more than 5 to 10 cm of crushed dry green clay. Then pour water (at room temperature) to completely cover the clay. Add your drops of essential oils (about 3 of each).

Cover the salad bowl with linen and wait for half an hour, so that the green clay dilute with water. By gently using a wooden spatula, try to render the mixture homogeneous. If the dough seems too compact, add liquid. If it seems too liquid, add a little clay. Using the spatula, take a little clay and spread it on a compress. The thickness of the clay layer should be about 2 cm. Cover with another compress. Then apply the poultice to the painful area. Prepare as many compresses as necessary to cover the lower back. From what the poultice becomes dry.

Warning: all essential oils are not recommended for children under 10 years and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

To fight against pain and inflammation, use the devil’s claw
And finally, to accelerate the healing, it is quite recommendable to couple your treatment with essential oils:

• Two capsules of harpagophytum (real name of the devil’s claw), dosed at 335 mg, three times a day for a week.

This plant, traditionally used for rheumatism, osteoarthritis and joint pain is very interesting in the treatment of sciatica.
The harpagophytum will allow you to both fights against inflammation and relieve pain.

The healing benefits of Grounding

Grounding, a concept not only known as a way of punishing your kids and keeping them inside all day but actually the opposite, being outside.

Absorb the Earths free-flowing electrons

Grounding, or Earthing, is a pretty simple concept where you absorb the Earths free-flowing electrons through the soles of your feet. In even simpler terms, go outside without your shoes or socks on and walk around. You can walk on anything from soilgrass or sand. As long as your feet are touching the Earth then, you will reap the rewards of soaking up the Earths energies.

Grounding : give balance to your body

Our bodies build up positive charges and it is believed that the Earth has mild negative charges. Therefore, when we put our feet on the ground, our bodies allow for the Earth’s negative charge to even out our positive charge and bring it back to Neutral. There is some interesting information about the free radicals in our bodies and how they affect us overall. Dr. Briffa, a practicing doctor, author, and international speaker, explains that free radicals have the ability to, “attack and destroy unwanted things within the body including bacteria and viruses. However, too many free radicals are a bad thing and have been implicated in chronic disease as well as the very process of aging …we want free radicals, but not too many. He goes on to further explain that, free radicals lack sparks of energy known as electrons, and that we can give the free radicals in our bodies more electrons through food, but also through grounding. Dr. Briffa states, “If the body has a positive charge on it, earthing allows electrons to flow into the body where, in theory, they can neutralize overblown free radical and inflammatory damage.

Grounding: boost your energy levels

So, why is grounding so beneficial for our health? According to research, Grounding has been seen to boost energy levelsregulate our nervous systemstrengthen our immune system, decreases anxiety and nervousness, relieve muscle tension and headachesprotects us from dangerous electromagnetic fields (EMF), helps regulate sleep rhythm and resetting our biological clock, can reduce pain, chronic pain and inflammation and can increase overall body healing.

Scientifically effective

study done in 2011 by G. Chevalier, T Sinatra and J.L. Oschman for Earthx L. Inc, took 50 people (28 females and 22 males) with sleep disturbances, chronic muscle, and joint pain. Subjects were separated into random groups. Both groups slept on “conductive carbon fiber mattress pads. Half of the pads were connected to a dedicated Earth ground outside each subject’s bedroom window and the other half slept on the mat as a placebo. After the month-long study, subjects who were grounded found relief in “asthma and respiratory conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, PMS, sleep apnea and hypertension. This study is quite amazing as it proves that grounding did more than just improve sleep, but aid in the healing of painful health issues. If you would like to read more about these studies, head to

The idea of grounding doesn’t seem so far fetched because if we think about it, shoes are a man-made item and became very thick and insulated around the 1800s after the basic leather shoe was modernized. My favorite thing about grounding is that its healing abilities are absolutely free! And who doesn’t love sinking their toes in the sand? All you have to do is go outside and walk on the ground for as long as you can (30 minutes is ideal.) to reap the benefits.
