Natural remedies for sciatica

Updated: Nov 30, 2020

Apart from medical treatment, sciatica can be relieved by some natural solutions. Oliceo gives you here some of these home remedies.

First of all, note that sciatica is a painful condition that can affect the daily life of the person with the disease.

It reflects a continuous pain that manifests itself in the sciatic nerve. Located in the lower part of the spine, the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It is subdivided and forms a set of nervous trunks. One of the missions of this nerve is to send the impulses towards the movements that we carry out.

Chronic or recurrent, sciatica is distinguished by the severe pain felt in the lumbar region. These pains can spread from the buttocks to the feet through the legs.

Sciatica problems usually occur as a result of:

1- A deficiency of magnesium or vitamins of group B.

2- A poor diet.

3- An excess of mercury in the blood.

4- A cumulative toxin in the joints  Neuralgic pain can also be caused by factors such as obesity, heavy loads or high-heeled shoes, herniated discs, poor posture and genetics.

In some cases, they are related to the presence of a tumour that covers the spinal cord of the lumbar region. Also be aware that if you sit for long hours or if you have diabetes, you are more likely to have sciatica in your life.

The conventional drugs used to calm sciatic pain, namely ibuprofen and paracetamol do not always provide the desired results. In addition, they can produce side effects that can aggravate the pain. That is why it is better to turn to natural remedies, effective to neutralize the symptoms of sciatica. We present you some of them:

1- Turmeric:

Several scientific studies have shown that turmeric has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in the same way as paracetamol, cortisone and ibuprofen. And unlike its medical products, it does not cause any side effects.

In the case of osteoarthritis of the knee or the shoulder, muscular pains, chronic headaches or sciatic pain, it acts effectively to limit the symptoms.

The curcumin it contains contributes significantly to the relief of inflammation and the reduction of oxidative stress. It also slows the ageing of the bones.

To achieve the anti-sciatic remedy:

*  Boil a glass of milk.

* Add a cinnamon stick after letting it rest for a few moments.

* Then put a teaspoon of turmeric in the glass and drink it twice a day until the pain subsides.

2- Hot and cold compresses:

Hot and cold compresses are an effective solution to lighten sciatica because of their anaesthetic effect on pain. Putting a hot compress on the painful part helps to restrict inflammation of the sciatic nerve.

As for the cold compress, it helps control the pain and weaken the swelling around the nerve. It is advisable to alternate the two by starting with the hot compress.

This remedy should be applied every two hours until the pain is relieved.

3- Yoga to eradicate sciatica:

Yoga is one of the natural methods that can be used to eliminate sciatic pain. Some yoga postures can indeed relax the muscles of the spine, which erases muscle contractions due to sciatica.

After a few sessions of yoga, the muscles of your body will relax and the back pain will disappear.

4- Nettle:

As a therapeutic plant, nettle can be used to control rheumatism and arthritis and sciatic pain. Drinking a nettle tea significantly reduces the pain caused by joint disorders.

5- Oregano and thyme:

Anti-inflammatory agents, oregano and thyme are two excellent natural solutions to treat a case of sciatica.

All you have to do is:

* To add a spoonful of thyme in a litre of water already containing a spoonful of oregano;

* Then boil this mixture for 15 minutes;

* Let stand 5 minutes before filtering and then consume two cups a day.

6- St. John’s Wort oil, a powerful remedy for sciatica:

Possessing analgesic properties, St. John’s Wort oil is an effective way to soften the sciatic pain. It consists of a substance called hypericin that has anti-inflammatory properties and acts on the nerves to minimize neuralgic pain. You just have to massage it on the affected area. This oil is available in organic shops and pharmacies.

7- Peppermint:

Peppermint essential oil is highly recommended for people with sciatica. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect, it soothes the pain related to the sciatic nerve. Just put a small amount on the affected areas.

8- The willow:

Comprising salicin, which is one of the active agents of aspirin, willow has analgesic properties. The infusion of willow, therefore, has a beneficial effect on sciatic pain.

By consuming it regularly, you will be able to suppress the muscular tensions and to calm the neuralgias.

To prepare it:

* Boil half a litre of water with a piece of willow bark;

* Cook for about fifteen minutes;

* Then remove the preparation from the heat, filter carefully and take one cup of the infusion every 8 hours.

If you are currently on medical treatment, tell your doctor before using any of these remedies to see if there is an opportunity for interaction.

In the meantime, to moderate the risk of sciatica, exercise regularly, avoid smoking and include more foods rich in vitamins C and magnesium in your diet. Vitamin C has a protective effect on the sciatic nerve and magnesium helps decrease the risk of muscle contraction.
